Jaisalmer

Jaisalmer, the Golden City of Rajasthan, rises from the Thar Desert as a fortress of honey-coloured sandstone near the border with Pakistan. Its centrepiece, Jaisalmer Fort, is one of the few living forts in the world, still housing homes, shops and temples within its ramparts, alongside ornately carved merchant havelis like Patwon Ki Haveli and Salim Singh Ki Haveli. A short drive away, the Sam Sand Dunes offer classic Thar Desert scenery for camel safaris, jeep dune-bashing and overnight desert camps with folk music and dance. The city's desert setting, medieval architecture and vibrant handicrafts make it one of Rajasthan's most photographed destinations.
